CAN YOU BE CHRISTIAN AND DIVINE NINE?
It’s the debate that keeps on debating.
For generations, some of the most prominent figures in Black America have belonged to historically Black Greek-letter organizations. According to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., members have included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Du Bois and Andrew Young. Kappa Alpha Psi lists civil-rights leader Ralph Abernathy among its notable members.
Yet a growing social-media movement is asking whether Christianity and Divine Nine membership can truly coexist.
Some former members argue that certain oaths, rituals, symbols and expressions of loyalty connected to Black Greek organizations conflict with their commitment to Christ. Others reject that interpretation, maintaining that fraternity or sorority membership is not worship and pointing to generations of Christian clergy, civil-rights leaders and community servants who have also worn Greek letters.
Now the debate has moved beyond TikTok...
