The NCAA is expanding access to mental health training across Division II athletics through a partnership with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Every active Division II school can receive one fully funded Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education training between September 2026 and August 2029. Up to 30 individuals at each school can participate in the 7½-hour virtual or in-person training, with participants earning a three-year MHFA certification upon completion.
The evidence-based program covers how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, respond to someone experiencing a crisis, connect student-athletes with professional support, and practice self-care. The training also uses a five-step action plan focused on approaching and assessing, listening without judgment, providing reassurance and information, encouraging professional help, and supporting ongoing self-care. 🙌
