Ahead of November’s election, California voters’ support for Proposition 40, also known as the billionare tax, is dwindling, according to a joint poll by the UC Berkeley Jack Citrin Center for Public Opinion Research and Politico.
An August poll from the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found that 48% of likely voters would vote “yes” on the proposition. Since then, according to the the Citrin Center poll, support has moved further from the simple majority needed to pass, shrinking to 46% as political spending against the measure has soared.
The margin of error for the Citrin Center poll is 2.7%.
Prop 40 is a wealth tax intended to fund state healthcare programs, food assistance initiatives and public education. If passed, it would levy a one-time 5% tax on the accumulated wealth of taxpayers and trusts with covered assets valued at more than $1 billion.
