Republicans have introduced a bill in Congress that would put a cap on the number of international students participating in varsity college athletics.
The Training and Education for American Members in University Sports and Athletics Act, or TEAM USA Act, authored by Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan and Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio, would ensure that no more than 20% of student-athletes on a varsity team are international students. If a team has fewer than 10 players, only one player can be an international student.
Out of the 28 Cal Athletics teams reviewed by the Daily Californian, 16 teams’ rosters are 20% or more international students. Women’s tennis, which has the highest percentage of international student-athletes, is 86% international.
