UC Berkeley alumnus U Min Zin has been detained in China for more than 100 days under investigation for “endangering national security.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio has since determined that Zin, a Myanmar-born U.S. citizen, was wrongfully detained, which requires the State Department to prioritize his release. Min Zin and other detainees are expected to be on a short list of issues President Donald Trump will raise when meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a summit in Washington, D.C., next week. Zin received his master’s degree in political science and government from UC Berkeley and advanced to doctoral candidacy in 2011. He is a founding member and the executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy – Myanmar, a non-partisan think tank. As a researcher, much of his published work focuses on conflicts and relationships between China and Myanmar.
