George Condo learned early what it meant to make an image recognizable.
After moving to New York in 1981, he spent nearly a year working on Andy Warhol’s silkscreen production, including the Myths series. But what stayed with him wasn’t Warhol’s technique as much as the immediacy of the work. A soup can could be spotted across a room and you knew exactly who made it.
Condo went looking for that same kind of identity in painting. He found it by pulling from centuries of art history, from Velázquez and Goya to Picasso, then twisting those familiar languages into something entirely his own.
The strange faces eventually became unmistakable.
Years later, Warhol came to one of Condo’s exhibitions with Keith Haring. According to Condo, they both bought several paintings.
From making Warhols to Warhol collecting Condos.
