5x100 didn't hold the bugeye back. It's the reason those cars still get built on a normal budget, and I'll die on this hill.
Everybody treats the 02-04 pattern like a punishment because they only shop the Subaru aisle. Meanwhile the 5x100 pool is full of light, cheap, genuinely good wheels that never got a WRX tax slapped on them — and a 2700lb car with 227hp doesn't need a 24lb barrel to look right.
The reference points, since half the arguments in the comments come from people guessing:
GD WRX 02-04 ran 16x6.5 +53 on 5x100, 56.1 hub. The 04 STI showed up on 5x114.3 with 17x7.5 +53 because the Brembos needed the room, and that's where the family split in half. 2008 killed the debate entirely when the GH/GR generation went 5x114.3 across the board. VA WRX sits at 17x8 +55, VA STI at 18x8.5 +55, same 56.1 hub the whole way through.
What actually matters: the +53 to +55 offsets Subaru has used forever are conservative for the arches, which is why a 18x9.5 +38 with a 255 looks bolted-...
