Between Stockholm’s “Twin” clubs… Right after the World Cup, we had the chance to stop by Sweden for one of the craziest derbies in European football. And although Sweden has a storied three-way rivalry between Djurgården, AIK, and Hammarby, the curious history between Djurgården and AIK arguably makes it the fiercest in the country. Both teams were founded just weeks apart from one another in 1891 (hence the Twin Derby monicker) and they’ve been sworn enemies ever since. Adding to the similarities between the two, both are currently tied at 12 league titles apiece after over a century of bitter competition. And this rivalry extends far beyond the pitch, as the Twin Derby (Tvillingderbyt) often results in spectacular tifos, booming chants, and pyro displays from both sets of fans, eager to give their side a leg up from the stands.
