In May 1829, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were working on the translation of the Book of Mormon. While they worked, they came across a passage about the importance of baptism for the remission of sins. After going into a nearby wood to pray about this ordinance, they were visited by John the Baptist, who restored important priesthood keys and brought the authority to baptize back to the world after it had been lost to apostasy for centuries.
