If they say no, you are being detained and have a right to not incriminate yourself (that pesky 5th Amendment). Be even more quiet after you ask for a lawyer. Say these words: "I want a lawyer." And then shut up. If you're innocent, be as quiet as a church mouse. You can't talk your way out of this.
