Microsoft has filed a patent application titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access” that introduces a mobile-style rewarded ad model to PC and console gaming.
Rather than interrupting active gameplay at random intervals, the system uses game-state data and APIs to identify natural break points—such as completing a boss fight, finishing a multiplayer match, ending a cutscene, or sitting on a loading screen. Once a downtime trigger is detected, the system temporarily freezes player inputs and presents an advertisement.
Watching the promotional content rewards players with time-based “credits” (typically granting roughly 20 to 30 minutes of ad-free access, depending on the game mode) before the system looks for the next natural pause. Aimed primarily at free-to-play or cloud-gaming models, the system attempts to generate ad revenue without disrupting live combat or match flow.
