Arizona police departments are now required by law to publicly post information about missing children on their official social media pages within 24 hours of receiving a report.
The new rules apply to missing, kidnapped and runaway children and require posts to include details like the child’s description, last known location, clothing, a current photo if available and a police contact number. Agencies generally also can’t publicly label a child a “runaway” unless investigators determine it’s necessary for the child’s safety or the investigation.
So if it feels like you’ve suddenly been seeing way more missing child flyers from Arizona police, officials say it doesn’t necessarily mean more children are going missing. The new law is making far more of those cases public.
Phoenix Police alone says it receives around 200 missing-child reports per month on average.
Do you think every missing child case should be posted publicly like this?
