Half an hour in the air taught me more about a lake than a whole season of walking round it did.
From the bank it's all flat water and a guess, which is the problem, and it's why the guys who keep catching are the ones who already know what's underneath. Go up once in decent light and it's all there. Where the shallow stops and the deep starts, and that line is the one they travel along. Which weed you'll never get a bait into and which weed has clear gaps all through it. Where the silt sits, where the gravel is, the bar you'd never have found with a lead in a fortnight.
And it doesn't go out of date. I've got flights on my phone from years ago that I still look at before a session on those waters. Not so much the weed as that can change every year but features like gravel bars, depths, feeding holes etc are all areas that are relevant even years later.
Check the fishery's rules before you put anything up though, plenty won't have it and I don't blame them.
