The photo never matches the fish, and the reason is decided before you lift it.
Light first, position second, camera last. A phone in good light beats a pro camera in bad light, every time. Low sun behind the camera, a grey sky as a softbox, the camera down at the fish's height, and at night the light from an angle, never head on. Then the fish goes back, and the return is the frame most people miss.
Your lens is part of it too. Up close, a wide lens stretches the fish and shrinks you. A standard 50mm on full frame sees it the way your eye does.
Try different light sources on your hand before the fish comes out of the net. It can be enlightening.
None of it adds a second to the fish's air time. Camera set before the lift, two lifts at most, water over the fish in between.
