The open water might be one of show jumping’s most recognizable obstacles, but getting to the other side isn’t necessarily the biggest test.
According to FEI Level 4 Course Designer Guilherme Jorge, what happens after the water can be even more important. Every horse tackles the obstacle differently—some jump only as far as necessary, while others make a huge effort or need extra momentum on approach. That directly affects what the rider has to work with on landing.
That’s where course design gets interesting. Riders may have to quickly regain control, adjust the stride, and shift from a powerful effort to a delicate, precise question just a few strides later.
It’s also why Jorge believes experience and opportunities to practice open water matter, especially as the obstacle appears less frequently in competition.
