In my experience, one of the most effective ways to help children listen and engage is by positively reinforcing the behaviour you want to see.
This can be especially important when coaching children with ADHD or SEND, where calling out behaviour in front of the group can sometimes create more pressure, overwhelm or unwanted attention.
Of course, every child is different and some will need extra support, clearer instructions, visual cues, movement breaks or a slightly different approach.
But as a general principle, focusing on the children who are showing great listening skills can be a brilliant place to start.
Highlight specific examples: “I love how Olivia is sitting there with her eyes on me, brilliant listening!”
Make your positive feedback enthusiastic and visible to the group.
