I double-checked the angle, and “Big 12 dark horse” is absolutely fair rather than calling WVU a favorite. They were picked anywhere from 10th to 16th in the Big 12 by several preseason publications, yet they’re now 3-0 for the first time since 2018 after beating No. 25 Virginia 38-27. Michael Hawkins Jr. accounted for 313 total yards and all five WVU touchdowns in that win and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

WEST VIRGINIA MIGHT BE THE BIG 12 DARK HORSE NOBODY SAW COMING 👀🔥
WVU was projected near the bottom of the conference entering 2026.
Three weeks later? 3-0.
The Mountaineers just knocked off No. 25 Virginia, and Michael Hawkins Jr. went OFF with 313 total yards and 5 TDs, including 123 yards and three scores on the ground.
Now Rich Rodriguez has WVU entering Big 12 play undefeated with a QB who looks more dangerous every week.
Still a long way to go, but Morgantown suddenly has something brewing. 👀
Can WVU actually make a run at the Big 12 title?...
