It’s Fat Bear Week in Alaska! All summer long, Alaskan brown bears have been lining the shores of Brooks River in Katmai National Park, gorging on sockeye as the fish fight their way upstream to spawn the next generation. The bears have just a few months to pack on as much weight as possible before hibernation. By late September, many have easily gained 500 lbs. The salmon run doesn’t just feed the bears, it fuels the entire surrounding ecosystem, carrying nutrients from the ocean deep inland. The bears spread those nutrients into the forest through salmon carcasses and their own droppings, making this summer ritual an integral part of a healthy Alaskan ecosystem. All summer has led to this week, and you can even vote for your favourite fat bear! Unfortunately, these bears are also being shot from helicopters by Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game. So while we celebrate their salmon-hunting success this week, please consider signing the petition to stop the cull — link in bio. Pho...
