Today, let’s remember what it took to get here.
On this day in 1957, President Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas National Guard and deployed the 101st Airborne to Little Rock to enforce the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School.
Just one generation before us, Melba Pattillo Beals, Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Thelma Mothershed, Terrence Roberts, and Jefferson Thomas had the necessary American audacity to fight for what was theirs.
Their weapon of choice? Showing up at their high school.
