Before Pruitt-Igoe became a symbol of St. Louis' troubled history, it was home to some legendary characters, including Fat Woods, who Terry Korpal remembers as one of the major figures in the heroin trade there. Terry, who patrolled Pruitt-Igoe as a young St. Louis police officer, talks about the detectives who were constantly after Woods, the attention he drew from police leadership and the lengths detectives went to trying to catch him. At one point, officers were instructed that if they found Fat Woods, they were to take him directly to the Chief of Detectives. And when detectives finally went after his operation inside Pruitt-Igoe, they ran into steel doors, barricades and a whole lot of trouble. This is a firsthand look at one of the legendary names from the Pruitt-Igoe era — from someone who was actually there.
