Before Angela Bassett became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses, she was a Yale student who noticed something important: there simply weren’t enough spaces for Black students to tell their stories.
In 1979, while studying at Yale, Angela founded the university’s first Black student theater group, originally called the Heritage Theater Ensemble. She created the space at a time when, according to her son Slater Vance, there were not even Black roles available at Yale’s drama school.
Angela’s son, Slater, who is currently a Yale student, has revived the organization under a new name, the Heritage Production Company. Nearly 70 students have already joined, and the group plans to produce both a play and a film each semester, with a focus on stories connected to the African diaspora.
Their first production is scheduled for spring 2027, and Angela is reportedly excited to see the space she created as a young woman living on through another generation.
