2.4L OR 3.0L⁉️⚙️ This is what happens inside a BMW S55 when you destroke it from 3.0 liters to just 2.4 liters.
⠀
The comparison shows how dramatically the piston travel changes when the engine uses a shorter-stroke crankshaft.
⠀
4N Motorsport built its 2.4-liter S55 specifically for extreme RPM, with a custom steel crankshaft, Mahle pistons and forged H-beam connecting rods.
⠀
Reducing the stroke allows the pistons to travel a shorter distance each revolution, helping reduce average piston speed as engine RPM climbs.
⠀
Their 2.4-liter S55 has been developed to rev as high as 11,000 RPM, far beyond the operating range of a factory 3.0-liter S55.
⠀
The tradeoff is reduced displacement, but for a purpose-built race engine the ability to safely sustain huge RPM can completely change its character.
⠀
Would you sacrifice displacement for an 11,000 RPM BMW straight-six?
