Britain’s first mosque opened on Christmas Day 1889 in a Liverpool terraced house, run by an English solicitor who came back from Morocco as Abdullah Quilliam. He was pelted with stones, funded by a prince from Afghanistan, named Sheikh al-Islam of the British Isles (the leader of Britain’s Muslims) by the Ottoman Sultan, yet he died in an unmarked grave under a different name. 🕌 #liverpool #mosque #islam #muslim #history
