Environmental defenders around the world are setting up self-defense systems to protect their lands and cultures from attack.
In Peru’s Amazon, the Kakataibo people started an Indigenous guard after crime syndicates killed several community members. Today, it has over 100 volunteers and 10 stations across the territory.
In Indonesia, the Dayak people have also developed a defense system to protect themselves against pulpwood companies taking over any more of their territory.
In 2025, over 120 land defenders were murdered across the world. About 85% of all the killings took place in Latin America, where there is often little government intervention and protection for Indigenous communities and their lands.
