The eviction of 87-year-old Madrid resident, Maricarmen Abascal, sparked nationwide protests over rising housing costs as so-called 'vulture funds' buy up residential homes.
Thousands of protestors camped on Madrid's Puerta del Sol and tens of thousands marched alongside them.
After a vulture fund bought her building and demanded 5 times the rent, Abascal was left unable to pay. After protests, she was allowed to return home on September 29 and Spain's government has proposed two royal decrees to tackle the housing crisis, with measures including a ban on evictions until 2030 and a ban on vulture funds until 2028.
