Most of us know the feeling of reaching for a banana, only for it to be brown, spotty, and just a bit past its peak.
Yet for shoppers in England, that could be a feeling of the past. The UK government has approved the sale of gene-edited bananas that resist browning as they age.
Developed by UK company Tropic Biosciences, the bananas use CRISPR techniques that find, cut and modify genetic sequences.
With the government estimating that roughly 20% of bananas are wasted as they go brown, the initiative aims to reduce food waste, whilst simultaneously improving farmer profits.
While the bananas still need to be submitted to the country's Food Standards Agency for the final go-ahead, the government greenlight demonstrates that the UK is taking advantage of a looser post-Brexit regulatory landscape.
