Students in Slovakia are turning to Mandarin as China's influence in Central Europe grows.
Anna Marina Vidová, a fifth-year student at Gymnázium Mikuláša Kováča, said her interest began at the age of nine, after reading a book on Chinese culture and history. She now hopes to major in international relations, saying relations between China and the European Union are very important, and that the EU "has a lot to offer" China as well.
Michaela Cholvádová, a high school graduate and now university student, said she was drawn to the culture, including the food and the sense of collectivism. She stressed that learning the language alone is not enough, and that students also need to understand how people think in their everyday lives.
At Moli Chinese Studio, learners Lucas and Charlie say they want to visit China, with the Great Wall high on the list.
