A new Volvo electric car factory outside Košice in eastern Slovakia is preparing to start test production at the end of September.
The investment is worth about $1.2 billion, and the plant is designed to produce up to 250,000 electric cars per year. Volvo expects to create about 3,300 direct jobs.
The impact is already being felt beyond the factory gates. In the center of Košice, the project is driving demand for housing, transport and other services.
Experts say the plant is part of a wider wave of Chinese investment in Slovakia. Volvo is owned by China's Geely Holding Group, meaning Chinese capital is becoming part of the country's next industrial chapter.
