Australia says an OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorized access to a government Medicare statistics portal in June, accessing both public and non-public files.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said a forensic investigation, supported by the Australian Signals Directorate, is underway to determine what other systems may have been affected.
Albanese said the portal contains non-sensitive Medicare data, including statistics on government spending. No personal information is currently believed to have been accessed.
He said there was no evidence of a broader compromise of the Services Australia network, but described the incident as “unacceptable.”
Albanese said he spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and expressed concern over how long the company took to notify the Australian government.
