Cultural Genocide 😟 Grateful to my Indigenous aunt in Montréal, who helped educate me and deepen my understanding of Indigenous history and experiences 🧡 --- Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For more than a century, #Canadian governments supported a residential-school system intended to separate #Indigenous children from their families, languages and cultures and assimilate them into Euro-Canadian society. More than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children were taken into the system. Many experienced physical and sexual abuse, harsh discipline, malnutrition, disease and inadequate medical care. Thousands of children died. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission found that residential-school students died at substantially higher rates than other Canadian children, with inadequate nutrition, sanitation, housing and medical treatment contributing to deaths.
