In 1989, a woman living beneath Manhattan's West Side Highway viaduct shares techniques to construct warm, makeshift homes. From using plastic to block freezing winds and carpeting for insulation, she details how unhoused residents like herself build warm, functional shelters outdoors. These improvised homes served as inspiration for architects Michael Sorkin, Lebbeus Woods, and John L. Young to design "Timesquare"—a radical counter-proposal to Donald Trump’s massive "Television City" development planned for this site. This 1989 clip is from "The 11th Hour" episode "Unbuilt City."
