Here’s the reality behind this whole UPI charge. There’s been a lot of confusion around the recent UPI charge, especially about who actually pays it and when it applies. I went through the government’s 10-page FAQ to break it down simply. The MDR is paid by the business, not the customer, and it is distributed between the bank, payment network and payment gateway. It also isn’t paid to the government. The charge only applies to certain transactions above ₹2,000, and the amount depends on the type of transaction.
