What is the role of GPs in prevention? Our recent poll showed 64% of patients would follow their GP’s advice on how to live healthily, yet 75% of GPs say they lack the time to offer preventive care. General practice already delivers substantial preventive care, but its impact is constrained by multiple factors including: • workforce pressures • lack of infrastructure • system design • the wider determinants of health There is significant potential for general practice to contribute further to population health improvement if this is addressed as part of a wider system response. Our new report focuses on the important role general practice can play as part of this wider response, and the support needed to create the capacity for this work.
