When the artist decides to play tricks on you. This is ‘Old Men Playing Chess,’ a playful yet profound painting from India’s first Pop artist, Bhupen Khakhar.
Here, Sotheby’s Manjari Sihare explores Khakhar’s trickery. Undoubtedly, the canvas shows eight trees, but in a catalogue essay Khakhar wrote about the painting, he notes that it contains only seven. As Sihare explains, it’s unclear today if Khakhar was intentionally joking with this error. Regardless, the discrepancy destabilizes his own analysis, turning Khakhar into both an artist and a critic.
See Khakhar’s deception with your own eyes this weekend at #SothebysLondon, where it’s a highlight of the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art auction. Plan your visit and register to bid at the link in bio.
