WSSC Water is warning all 1.9 million of its customers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties to only use water for essential purposes until further notice.
A power outage at the Potomac Water Filtration Plant, WSSC's largest plant, has affected that plant's ability to operate. The plant supplies drinking water to about 75% of WSSC customers, the utility said.
Right now, water is safe and there is no need for WSSC customers to boil it before use. The essential-water-use-only warning was issued to try and prevent the need for a future Boil Water Advisory in the area.
Residents should:
- Take shorter showers and quickly turn off all faucets immediately after use
- Do not use any water outdoors, including lawn irrigation
- Limit flushing toilets (i.e. do not flush after every use)
- Limit washing machine and dishwasher use
