Between Oct. 16 and Oct. 26, there will be no Amtrak or Virginia Railway Express (VRE) service from Union Station headed south as a major piece of infrastructure underneath Union Station, known as an interlocking, has to be completely replaced.⁠ ⁠ Service between D.C. and points north like Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston is not expected to be impacted.⁠ ⁠ For commuters looking for help getting around the trackwork, think of L'Enfant Plaza as home base during this time.⁠ ⁠ There, VRE has the capability to pull trains basically off to the side after everyone has gotten off and then they can reverse the train and send it right back into Virginia⁠ ⁠ In terms of Amtrak service, during the shutdown there will basically be no service between Union station and Alexandria.⁠ ⁠ VRE will continue to run trains to L'Enfant Plaza on a reduced schedule, providing a trip into D.C. for rail riders.⁠ ⁠ Metro will also be a good option for many during this time, and Amtrak is setting up some...
