Four students at North Carolina State University developed a concept called Undercover Colors, a nail polish designed to change color when exposed to certain drugs that can be used to spike drinks. The idea was to give people another way to check whether a drink may have been tampered with. The project attracted significant attention and funding, although the original nail polish remained a developing concept rather than a widely available consumer product. The story became an early example of students using materials science to address a serious safety problem.
