Just because hydrogen and helium make up almost all of the universe's ordinary matter does not mean the other elements are somehow invalid. The less abundant elements still exist, and many of them are essential to stars, planets, life and everything around us. The same idea can apply when we talk about gender. A binary may describe the majority, but that does not erase people whose identities fall outside it. The American Psychological Association recognizes gender identities beyond the binary, including nonbinary identities.
