When disaster strikes, who should pay the price?⁣ ⁣ Since Friday, September 25, the residents of Chachoengsao in Thailand have been experiencing a massive flood that submerged areas across the entire province, impacting over 19,346 households and claiming over four lives.⁣ ⁣ The severe flooding was caused by continuous heavy rainfall from monsoons and storms, which caused the Si Yat Reservoir to overflow its spillway. This was further exacerbated by high tides that slowed the drainage of water into the sea, sending massive flows surging into homes across Chachoengsao and other eastern provinces. Meanwhile, the climate crisis is driving rainfall that is heavier and longer-lasting. ⁣ ⁣ This disaster raises a critical question: why must ordinary citizens bear the losses while Thailand continues to expand fossil fuel power generation?
