As an emergency doctor, I meet people at some of the most painful moments of their lives. One thing I often see in people experiencing suicidal crisis is how much shame, guilt and emotional pain they are carrying. Some have reached a point where they no longer feel valuable, connected or important to the people around them. That is why the way we respond matters. Listen without judgment. Stay present. Treat someone with dignity. Help them feel heard as a human being, rather than reducing them to a diagnosis or a crisis. And we should not wait until someone reaches breaking point to do this. Check in. Make space for difficult conversations. Remind the people you care about that they matter. Sometimes prevention starts much earlier than we realise. If you or someone you know is struggling, Samaritans are available 24/7 in the UK on 116 123. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999. #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #EmergencyMedicine #TraumaInformedCare
