A new study published last week in Behavioral Sciences surveyed 78 NCAA Division I, II and III student-athletes and found that nearly 40% of student-athletes reported lifetime suicidal ideation, with 58% of those experiencing it during college. Yet, only 35% had received suicide prevention training during college.
The study also found that student-athletes are most likely to reach out to a teammate for mental health support. The Hidden Opponent’s approach remains steadfast that developing mental health leadership in student-athletes will create a world where all student-athletes are equipped to support themselves and their teammates.
While Suicide Prevention Month is coming to a close, it’s important to remember that actionable, proactive suicide prevention is a year-round obligation. Suicide prevention education, accessible mental health resources, and a culture of peer support need to be part of the entire athletic experience and ecosystem.
