More rest doesn’t mean your body stops needing fuel. 😴🍽️
For Day 5 of Mental Wellness Empowerment Week, sports dietitian Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, founder of The Sports Nutrition Playbook, talks about fueling when your schedule changes and you’re getting more sleep.
Sleeping in and getting extra rest can be great for recovery, but if that means sleeping through meals you would normally eat, Amy encourages athletes to make sure they’re still getting adequate nutrition; especially if they’re continuing to practice, work out or hit the weight room.
Her advice: eat when you get up, even if that means a brunch-style meal, and add nutrient-dense snacks like smoothies, energy bites or protein-rich options later in the day.
Don’t let what you see online convince you that more rest automatically means you need less fuel. Give your body what it needs to perform well, recover well and be ready when it’s time to return to your season.
