A Johnston church is opening a community center to offer the public child care, recreation, mental health support, and tutoring for refugee students. NorthPoint Church, at 9901 N.W. 62nd Ave., hosted an open house on Thursday to celebrate the opening of the community center — a project that began in September 2024 with a remodeling of NorthPoint's existing building to add Pathways Learning Academy, a 9,000-square-foot early child care center in the east wing. The remodeling also created space for other features: a cafe that's been open since February; an indoor play area for children; indoor pickleball courts with basketball and volleyball courts available; outdoor pickleball and basketball courts; gathering areas; and NorthPoint Counseling Collective for contracted mental health professionals.
