Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate turned over voter information to the federal government but refused a federal request that would’ve required the state to remove voters the U.S. Department of Justice flagged as “ineligible” from its rolls.
The denial stems directly from Pate’s agreement in May to transfer over two million of Iowa voters’ sensitive data to the DOJ as part of the Trump administration’s effort to crack down on alleged voter fraud.
Iowa was among 17 states that allowed the DOJ to access voters’ partial Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, birthdates and addresses last spring following a 2025 executive order from President Donald Trump directing states to provide voter data to compile a federal voter database.
