Gov. Kim Reynolds is calling the Iowa Legislature to convene for a special session to pass tax incentives for a new $15 billion steel plant in southeast Iowa — a move that comes just weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The session will be held on Friday, Oct. 2, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Reynolds said in a news release. The move is a response to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Monday, Sept. 28, that Mesabi Metallics plans to build a steel mill in southeast Iowa’s Lee County to help refine direct reduced iron mined upstream in northern Minnesota’s Iron Range. Trump said the $15 billion project would be the largest steel plant in U.S. history. It is projected to support 6,000 construction jobs and 1,750 permanent jobs in Iowa, with steelmaking beginning in 2030. Tap the link in our bio for more on this story. #Iowa #IApolitics #IAlegis
