Ever since the 1450s, when letterpress printing started to be formalized, a way was developed to organize all the letters of type. What takes up a great deal of space in a print shop, especially our shop, is type. In the background of our videos are type cabinets full of type cases. Each type case is an individual font (typeface, size, and style). We have about 350 different fonts between what is in our print shop exhibit and in our storage. Most of the type is organized in a specific style of type case called the California job case. In this video, Lou explains the history and layout of the California job case. He also shares the way he learned to memorize the layout over 50 years ago when he first learned printing in school. #SacHistoryMuseum #museumtok #printing #letterpress #learnontiktok
