Even astronauts go back to school 🪨🔨
Meet the class of PANGAEA’s 10th edition:
@astro.pablo.esa,
@NASA’s Jasmin Moghbeli, and JAXA’s
@astro_kimiya. Three astronauts on a hands-on geology course.
PANGAEA trains astronauts to think like field scientists long before they ever set foot on the Moon or Mars. They learn to read a landscape, spot a sample worth bringing home, and describe it to ground control in language that’s clear and correct.
PANGAEA starts out in the Bletterbach canyon in the Italian Dolomites, with part of the day spent on classroom theory, followed by expeditions out in the field.
They’re using every sense to do it: touching rock textures, watching how layers stack on top of each other, even sketching an outcrop to work out where a riverbed ran millions of years ago.
Which sense would you trust most out there: sight, touch or smell? Tell us in the comments!
