Disney legend Glen Keane had to be airlifted off Mummy Mountain after making it to the top and realizing he couldn’t safely make it back down. 🚁
The 72-year-old animator behind characters including Ariel, Aladdin, the Beast and Tarzan grew up in Paradise Valley and climbed Mummy Mountain when he was younger. He returned this summer with his daughter and grandchildren, but near the summit became dizzy, weak and unsteady. Phoenix firefighters reached him before a helicopter hoisted him to safety.
The story got even better afterward. About a week later, Keane returned to meet the Phoenix and Tempe firefighters who rescued him and gave them an original illustration he drew of the rescue with the message, “Our family helping your family.” 🥹
Keane won an Oscar alongside Kobe Bryant for Dear Basketball and was named a Disney Legend in 2013.
Pretty full-circle way for one of Disney’s most famous animators to thank the people who came to his rescue.
