The Arizona Humane Society is asking for foster homes after its cruelty investigators rescued 14 dogs from a VRBO rental property on Sept. 5.
According to AHS, investigators were called to the property after a report that several dogs had been left behind when their owner checked out. They found 14 dogs that were sick, matted and malnourished, living in what the organization described as horrific conditions. Three dead puppies were also found in a freezer.
All 14 dogs were taken to the AHS Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, where veterinarians found them covered in urine and feces. Two dogs were in irreversible organ failure and were humanely euthanized. The 12 survivors range in age from 3 months to 5 years old. Half have been placed in foster homes. The remaining six need foster care once they are medically cleared.
No arrests or charges have been reported, and the owner has not been publicly identified.
