Late monsoon storms are bringing extreme flooding to Greenlee County in eastern Arizona, and local officials say it is far from typical.
Greenlee County Sheriff Eric Ellison shared footage of heavy flooding across the region, with water raging across local pathways and every road and creek in the area running heavy. The Gila River normally runs about a foot deep during monsoon season, and Ellison says it is usually ankle deep this time of year. Levels have now reached at least 16 feet.
A landslide also hit Duncan and temporarily closed a roadway until ADOT cleaned it up. Ellison said the flooding in Duncan put as much as three feet of water on some roads. The river sits a little higher than the town, so if the dike goes, Duncan will flood.
The threat extends to the nearby town of Clifton, where the San Francisco River is rising rapidly.
